Incorrect Hoses
Definition
Hoses do not allow proper flow, pressure, or range of motion.
Description
Hoses provide the fluid (air, oil, water, etc.) flow path for movement, cooling or signal transmission.
The following is a basic list of hose characteristics that must be considered for proper equipment function: length, diameter, flexibility, material and color.
- Diameter: If the diameter is too small, there may be a restriction in the flow and increase in the pressure drop, and fitting issues may occur. If the diameter is too large, flexibility and fitting issues may arise.
- Flexibility: If the hose is too stiff, range of motion may be reduced.
- Material: If the wrong type (hydraulic, air etc.) is used, rupture or fluid contamination may occur.
- Color: If the hose is color coded, incorrect substitution may cause maintenance issues.
Detection
Detectable evidence may include:
- Cracks and Holes
- Expulsion/Burn Through
- Poor Class A Appearance
- Sheet Metal Distortion
- Sticking/Stuck Tips
- Leaks in the hoses
- Visual inspection
Significance
Quality, Workplace Issues, Cost, Downtime, Maintenance, Throughput (cycle time; PPH), are all potentially affected by this condition.
Throughput: Cylinder movement may be delayed due to restrictive hoses.
