MFDC technology converts three-phase AC input power to medium-frequency DC at the welding transformer, operating typically between 1,000 and 4,000 Hz. At these frequencies, the transformer’s magnetic core can be made dramatically smaller and lighter than an equivalent 50/60 Hz AC unit. Beyond the physical benefits, MFDC current control is inherently more precise: current rise and fall times are faster, weld time increments are finer, and the DC waveform eliminates the half-cycle asymmetry inherent in AC welding.
